Susan Snyder

Designer | Susan SnyderI am the product of two parents who attended arts colleges. My father became an architect and my mother studies fashion design. A modern design aesthetic surrounded me growing up with mid century modern furniture by Ray and Charles Eames, George Nelson, Hans Wegner, Gio Ponti and many other masterful designers. The modernist architecture designs of my father and the objects in out home have left an indelible impression on me and inform my jewelry design. In addition my mother had a wonderful modernist jewelry collection including designs by Betty Cooke, Ed Levin, Georg Jensen and Ed Wiener.

I too attended college for art, earning a BFA in photography at Rutgers University. In 1999 I began working with metals and designing and producing jewelry. I am a self-taught jewelry designer and credit any knowledge I have to several good books on jewelry design and metal smithing. It is a difficult yet challenging way to learn a craft and I look forward to expanding my skill by working with other metal smiths in a structured environment.

I aspire to work that has modern, clean lines and a minimalist look. At times I combine this aesthetic with more organic forms and elements. My designs are my own but having spent many years appreciating the work of others I know that there are influences from their work that are visible in mine. That being said it is my goal to never copy another artist's work.

I view jewelry as artistic and sculptural adornment and find the line between sculpture, painting, object, furniture design, architecture and jewelry to be a fluid one. Some of my pieces are suitable for everyday wear while others are more bold and larger in scale and can be worn on occasions when high impact is the goal. Much of this is determined by the wearer, as it should be.

I work primarily in sterling silver but also use gold, brass, copper and gemstones. My jewelry is primarily solder constructed but I am looking to expand my use of casting and cold joint construction and have a strong desire to incorporate enameling into my work. Much of my work has a brushed surface or has an oxidized finish which adds great visual interest and depth to a piece.

I hope you enjoy the work and please contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.
